Banded Mongoose – Mungos mungo
The banded mongoose is probably the most commonly spotted of all the savanna mongooses—mostly because they behave like a tiny, furry marching band that forgot its sheet music.

A group of mongooses is called a pack, and they usually emerge from their den well after dawn, blinking at the sun like teenagers forced out of bed too early. Once everyone is awake and accounted for, they set off across the grass in a wonderfully undulating column, looking both cautious and determined, as if on a very important mission (which, to be fair, they are).

These playful little carnivores forage individually, each one jealously guarding its prize—be it a millipede, a beetle, or a particularly glamorous dung ball. Stealing from a neighbour is strictly frowned upon, and loud arguments may follow… but only briefly, because there are always more snacks to find.

Small, social, and endlessly entertaining, banded mongooses prove—once again—that the savanna is full of characters, not only big cats.
